What an earnings report is: every 3 months, a company tells everyone how much it sold and earned. We read the figures, the outlook, and how the stock moved after.
Sales of $1.5B, 4% more than a year ago.
“Operating expenses were higher by $30 million and $103 million for the three and nine months ended September 30, 2026, as compared to the same periods in 2025, due in part to increased production costs from higher purchased water cost and usage and increased purchased power and chemicals costs, partially offset by a decrease in operating supplies and services costs, primarily from lower technology related costs, and a decrease in maintenance materials and supplies costs.”

American Water Works is the largest investor-owned US water and wastewater utility, serving nearly 4 million customers in 14 states. It provides water and wastewater services to residential, commercial, and industrial customers and operates predominantly in regulated markets. The company's nonregulated business is water services for military bases, which operates under long-term contracts with regulated-like returns. The proposed Essential Utilities acquisition would add regulated water and wastewater utilities in Ohio, North Carolina, and Texas while increasing its presence in Illinois, Indiana, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Virginia.
“The Company’s Regulated Businesses generally do not face direct competition in their existing markets because (i) the Company operates in those markets pursuant to franchises, charters, certificates of public convenience and necessity or similar authorizations (collectively, “CPCNs”) issued by state PUCs or other authorities, and (ii) the high cost of constructing a new water and wastewater system in an existing market creates a significant barrier to market entry.”
